Dr. Susan Carr is a specialist in Small Animal Internal Medicine. She earned her Bachelor of Veterinary Science from the University of Sydney in 2009, then worked in general practice and emergency medicine on Australia’s Gold Coast before returning to Sydney for a small animal internship. She completed her residency in Small Animal Internal Medicine, along with a Master of Science, at Virginia Tech in 2018 and became board-certified by the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine in 2019.
Dr. Carr is one of the team of Small Animal Internal Medicine specialists at the Veterinary Teaching Hospital, where she supervises and teaches veterinary students and house officers. She has a particular passion for geriatric cat medicine, including carefully managing the many conditions that often coexist in older cats and working closely with their devoted owners. Her clinical interests are in minimally invasive interventional medicine, including gastrointestinal, respiratory and urinary endoscopy, laser interventions, and stenting for conditions such as tracheal collapse and urinary tract obstruction.
Dr. Carr is also an active clinical researcher. Her work focuses on lower urinary tract disease, including urolithiasis and urodynamic disorders, as well as gastrointestinal and endocrine diagnostics in dogs and cats. She welcomes enquiries from colleagues interested in collaborating on clinical research in small animal internal medicine.
Outside the hospital, Dr. Carr lives with her family and a menagerie that includes two cats and Lexi, a beagle whose indiscriminate appetite gives her plenty of firsthand experience with what dogs will eat. She also has a soft spot for Siamese cats and their larger-than-life personalities.
