Referring Veterinarians

The Atlantic Veterinary College Veterinary Teaching Hospital (AVC-VTH) serves as the referral centre for large and small animal veterinarians across Atlantic Canada.

Notices for Referring Veterinarians

Effective June 27, 2021, the protocols and documentation required for entry to PEI have changed. Clients referred for urgent/emergency/specialty veterinary care should be notified of these changes to ensure that they can pass through the point of entry to PEI as smoothly as possible and in strict adherence to public health requirements of the Chief Public Health Office (CPHO) of PEI.

If referring a client to AVC please provide them with the following:

  1. Proof of Appointment Letter
All clients should bring their Proof of Appointment letter from the AVC-VTH to present at the point of entry to PEI.
  2. Information for AVC-VTH clients from Atlantic Canada regarding entry to Prince Edward Island
This provides information on the PEI Pass and the PEI Self-Isolation Declaration form (for clients not eligible for a PEI Pass).

All clients are advised to apply for a PEI Pass or complete a PEI Self-Isolation Declaration form prior to travel. This documentation should be printed and available to present to PEI point of entry officials.

Clients arriving at the point of entry to PEI without a PEI Pass or a PEI Self-Isolation Declaration form may experience delays before being permitted entry to PEI. To reduce delays, it is recommended that travellers who have received at least one dose of an approved COVID-19 vaccine should bring proof of vaccination documentation to present at the point of entry to PEI.

Clients travelling for short-notice urgent and emergency veterinary care may not have sufficient time to receive approval for a PEI Pass application. It is still advisable for these clients to submit an application for a PEI Pass, to allow entry for recheck or follow-up appointments, if required.

Clients must strictly adhere to all public health measures required by the Chief Public Health Office (CPHO) of PEI and by the direction received from point of entry officials. Clients are required to undergo COVID-19 testing at the point of entry to PEI and may be required to be self-isolate while on PEI, depending on their documentation and vaccination status.
