The Ambulatory Equine Service at AVC provides on-farm care for horses of all breeds and disciplines. We currently have 3 faculty members, a resident, and a technician. Two faculty members are Diplomates of the American Board of Equine Practitioners in Equine Practice and one faculty member is a Diplomate of the American College of Theriogenologists. We offer on-farm specialty equine service throughout PEI and place an emphasis on preventative care and sports medicine. Procedures provided include lameness examinations and treatment, poor performance, dentistry, reproduction, chiropractic manipulation, power dentistry, geriatric medicine, minor surgeries, and wellness examinations.
The Ambulatory Equine Service team is fully equipped portable ultrasound, portable digital radiography (x-ray), power dentistry, upper airway endoscopy, gastroscopy and overground dynamic endoscopy to provide in-the-field primary and emergency patient care as well as preventive health care programs to horses.
We provide outpatient field service for patients of the Veterinary Teaching Hospital. Typical procedures include general medicine, lameness testing and treatment in Standardbreds and pleasure horses, and minor surgical procedures on-site. Service support is provided by AVC’s Veterinary Teaching Hospital including faculty members in the large animal medicine, surgery and theriogenology services, Animal Health Technicians and interns. This service provides both primary care and 24-hour emergency coverage
