If your animal is experiencing a veterinary emergency, please call or come directly to the veterinary teaching hospital.
WHAT TO EXPECT
LEVEL OF CARE: The new small animal emergency service at AVC will provide the same standard of care that you receive with your regular veterinarian. The service is designed to be practical and accessible. This is not a referral or specialty service.
SERVICES AVAILABLE: We have a wide range of services including:
- Diagnostic testing- in-house bloodwork, urinalysis, x-rays and ultrasound
- Medical care including fluid therapy, hospitalization, medications and treatments
- Surgical care of lacerations and wounds
- Trauma care for animals that have been injured including a full intensive care unit
- Referral care through our main referral
- Services for Internal Medicine, Surgery, Cardiology, Dermatology, and more
OPTIONS: You will always be presented with all available options for the care of your animal. We will work with you and your budget to find the best solution.
HOURS: The emergency service is available as soon as your regular veterinarian closes until they re-open the next morning. We are also fully staffed on weekends and holidays. The reception team leaves at 11 pm at which time the front doors lock, but there are always staff on site ready to help!
COSTS: An after-hours visit costs $175 before 10 pm and $200 after 10 pm. Taxes are included. This visit includes a full examination and consult with an emergency veterinarian. It does not include additional tests or treatments. Rechecks for the same condition are free within a 24 hour period from discharge.
PAYMENT POLICY: The hospital does not offer payment plans, but we work with several external financing companies to help support you in your financial decisions and needs. 50% of the estimate is due prior to proceeding with any treatment or service, and the remainder is due upon discharge.
STAFF: This service is staffed by a caring team of emergency veterinarians, registered veterinary technicians, and receptionists.
The emergency services at the AVC Teaching Hospital are an extension of your pet’s regular health care team. We know that our pets don’t choose when to get sick, and we are here so that your animal has round-the-clock access to veterinary care.
If your furry friend is ill or injured after hours you can come directly to the Teaching Hospital for after-hours care.
We send all of your pet’s medical records and health care information back to your regular veterinarian so that they can continue to care for your animal when they re-open. This allows your pet to receive 24-7-365 care, helps our students learn the basics of emergency medicine from trained Emergency Veterinarians, and allows your regular veterinarian to turn off their phones in the evening, so that they can be their best selves when they are at work.
