Where more advanced diagnostic and treatment options may be needed, we can discuss in-house referral care for patients through our specialty services, including Internal Medicine, Surgery, Cardiology, Dermatology, and more.
We will work with you to discuss the available options for the care of your pet so that, together, we can find the best solution for your pet and your family.
HOURS: Between 8am and 11pm, the AVC Urgent & Emergency Primary Care service is here for you and your pet with care you can trust. Our reception is staffed by Client Services Representatives who are available to answer your questions and for client liaison with our clinical teams.
We recommend you call ahead at 902-566-0950 so our VTH team can provide further direction and to help our team prepare for your pet.
Between 11pm and 8am, please contact your Family Veterinarian directly to speak with their overnight triage team.
COSTS: An urgent or emergency visit starts with a basic triage assessment, which is free of charge. Following triage, your pet will receive a full examination and consult with an emergency veterinarian. They may recommended further tests or treatments and will provide an estimate of those costs which are additional to the exam fee. For your peace of mind, rechecks for the same condition are free within a 48 hour period from discharge.
PAYMENT POLICY: Payment is due at the time of service. Where additional tests or treatments are recommended and agreed to, 50% of the estimated costs is due prior to proceeding with any diagnostics or treatments with the remainder due in full upon discharge.
At the Atlantic Veterinary College Teaching Hospital we accept debit cards, most major credit cards and cash. The hospital does not offer payment plans, but we work with several external financing companies to help support you in your financial decisions and needs.
YOUR AVC CLINICAL CARE TEAM: Your clinical care team will typically include a registered veterinary technician, senior (final year) veterinary student, and a primary care emergency clinician. Behind the scenes, the wider hospital team will provide the highest level of care and attention to meet your pet’s needs during their stay. Our reception is staffed by a dedicated team of Client Service Representatives.
TEACHING HOSPITAL: The AVC Urgent & Emergency Primary Care service supports the training of senior (final year) veterinary students, who participate in all aspects of your pet’s care at the Veterinary Teaching Hospital.
AN EXTENSION OF YOUR FAMILY VETERINARIAN: The AVC Urgent & Emergency Primary Care team serves our patients and clients and supports your pet’s family veterinary clinic team. We know that our pets don’t choose when to get sick, and we will do our best to ensure that your animal has access to urgent and emergency veterinary care throughout the day and evening.
If your furry friend is ill or injured, you can come directly to the Veterinary Teaching Hospital for veterinary care between 8am-11pm Monday-Sunday.
We recommend you call ahead at 902-566-0950 so our VTH team can provide further direction and to help our team prepare for your pet.
After 11pm and before 8am, clients with a Family Veterinarian are encouraged to contact their clinic’s primary number and follow the directions they receive for their clinic’s after-hours arrangements.
If your pet receives veterinary care at the VTH, we will send all medical records and health care information back to your family veterinarian so that they understand your pet’s condition and treatment for continuity of care of the urgent and emergency cases that we support them with throughout the day.
