Anesthesiology

Anesthesiology

The Anesthesiology service works with many of the other services in the Veterinary Teaching Hospital to provide comprehensive anesthetic and pain management services for small and large domestic animals, as well as many exotic animals.

The skilled and dedicated Anesthesiology service team includes dedicated Anesthesiology technicians and the only board-certified Anesthesiologists in Atlantic Canada, who work together to provide an exceptional standard of care for animals admitted to the Veterinary Teaching Hospital. Each patient is evaluated by the Anesthesiology service to determine the risks associated with anesthesia.  Anesthetic and analgesic (pain management) drugs, regional anesthetic (local and nerve blocks) techniques, patient monitoring, and appropriate supportive care are carefully selected to minimize the patient’s anesthetic risks and to ensure that each patient is as comfortable as possible.

Ahead of your appointment

Your pet’s appointment will be booked with one of the Veterinary Teaching Hospital’s primary care or specialty referral services.  Your pet’s clinical care team will work with the Anesthesiology service behind the scenes to create individual anesthetic and pain management protocols appropriate for your pet’s needs.

As the teaching hospital for Atlantic Veterinary College veterinary students, our goal at the AVC-VTH is to provide exceptional veterinary care to your pet while also providing clinical teaching and instruction to our senior (final year) veterinary students, interns and residents.  The Anesthesiology service provides an exceptional learning environment for our students, with senior veterinary students participating in patient care under the direct supervision of a member of the Anesthesiology service team.

The Anesthesiology service has developed posters outlining anesthetic and pain management protocols and principles for small animals, and similar protocols and principles for large animals, in collaboration with the Sir James Dunn Animal Welfare Centre and the Canadian Veterinary Medical Association.
