Referring Veterinarians

The AVC – Veterinary Teaching Hospital serves both as a supportive teaching environment and a specialty referral centre for large and small animal veterinarians throughout Atlantic Canada.

Across our small and large animal hospitals, we offer state of the art technology with advanced imaging modalities including CT and MRI, and boast over 20 specialist veterinarians and a highly-skilled team of veterinary technicians and support staff.

How to Refer

At the AVC – Veterinary Teaching Hospital, we want to make it as convenient and efficient as possible for our referring veterinarian community to refer patients to us.
Our online referral system is your dedicated destination for submitting routine and emergency referral requests to our small and large animal specialty services.  All referral requests – routine or emergency, in-hours or out-of-hours – should be submitted through the online referral system.

Routine referral requests

Routine referral requests can be completed online, saving you the need to connect with us by phone.  Our Referral Team will contact your client directly to schedule their animal’s specialty appointment with us.  We want to keep you in the loop, so we’ll also email the appointment details to your clinic.

Emergency referral requests

Emergency referral requests can also be submitted online but for emergencies we ask that you call us at 902-566-0950 to discuss the case with the relevant clinician.  The relevant specialty service may ask for you to complete the online referral request submission prior to discussing the case with you.
These steps ensure that we are better prepared to collaborate with you in meeting the needs of your patient and their family.

All relevant medical records including diagnostic imaging and laboratory results should be uploaded during your online referral submission.
